Being very productive principle inventor and investigator on a firm basis of my work in wide spectra engineering and economics, I am sure that energy and production have to be and are ready to be green & cheap & abundant & inexhaustible, while all materials and parts and tools for that purpose can be recyclable.
Regarding to fossil fuels, they can and must be substituted by artificial oil and gas, can be competitive if primary energy to produce them being cheaper 1.0 cent/kWh.
Below I show some ways to reach such cost target.
To produce a barrel of artificial oil of refined quality we need
(44 * 1400 + 6 * 50,000) * 0.159 * 0.85 /14 = 3,500 kWh /boe (barrel of oil equivalent) as OPEX
Here:
44 – CO2 molecular mass;
1400 (kWh) - electric energy for 1.0 ton CO2 production (see Note 1)
6 – molecular mass of 3 H2;
50,000 (kWh) –electric energy for 1.0 H2 ton production by the water splitting by concentrated rays of standard magnetrons;
0.159 (m3) – barrel;
0.85 (ton/m3) – density of oil of refined quality
14 – (CH2) molecular mass
Moreover, existing and well known technologies allow halving demand in oil and gas by water vapor reforming them in hydrogen in very small flow rate, so such hydrogen consume is hazard free and allows twice more energy effective electric generator being hydrogen-air fuel cells, being compact and cheap device if mass produced vs. conventional direct oil and gas usage for energy needs.
Different inventions promise primary renewable electricity cheaper USD 0.01/kWh each at 5 years payback and then practically free.
They are.
1. Solar thermal heterodyne. 2020. It allows a rectenna to be feasible at present level of rectifiers. About 0.6 cent/kWh electricity (see Note 2).
2. Even well know solar PV panels can harvest 65% more solar energy with a help of a tracking planar foil reflector, adding additional sun to the PV panel, 2020. Now such panels are dramatically cheapened. Now (March, 2022) it is about 0.8 -2.0 cent/kWh electricity.
3. Sailboats with hydro-generator. 2017. Its electricity is transformed on-board in hydrogen, and then in more transportable fuels at floating nearby terminals. About 0.35 cent/kWh electricity.

Breeding investment allows by credit for a first power plant in five steps to invest and build some tens analogous power plants. .
So OPEX is negligible vs. CAPEX, can be full cost of artificial intermediary fuel for 100% off-grid electricity by 2.5 cent/kWh. For housing such autonomy can be provided by local fuel-in-electricity substations. Autonomous supply can be paralleled by much cheaper direct grid supply.

CO2 can be USD 15.0/ton being my estimation with a good reserve, and being produced in quantity of 320 ton/m2/year in production ponds and by electricity cheaper than USD 0.01/kWh

Note 2.
The said goal is achievable by solar power plants operated in snow-free seasons only and reserved in a form of artificial fuel, mainly for snow seasons.
Solar electro-thermal power plant of my design, it is original solar concentrating system with thermal heterodyne in focal spot being motionless and serving to convert high temperature heat in electricity with energy efficiency about 67%, while mechanical part of the concentrator is about USD 15.0/kWp. It is Antenna source of electricity being rectenna with rectifiers about 2.5 THz or so.
I suppose 7 months (since April to October) in a years as operational time, with 12 hours daylight with cloudiness 50%, 12 h * 200 d * 0.5 = 1200 kWh/m2. Supposing Rectenna to be some times more expensive than PV cell and to be USD 1.0/W and concentration ratio 100 : 1, it is USD 10/ kW. Being summarized, it is (15 $ + 10$) / (1200 kWh * 5 years payback) / 0.67 efficiency = 0.6 cents/ kWh electricity.
